Originally named for its first occupant S.W. Straus, and over the years renamed for other famous inhabitants including
Encyclopedia Britannica, Metropolitan Tower was the first Chicago building with over 30 floors. As a beacon of our great
city, Metropolitan Tower is commonly referred to as the “Beehive” building for its iconic, deep blue orb, powered by six
1000-watt bulbs that sit atop the 40-foot limestone pyramid surrounded by (4) bison’s. Right under the “hive” you can
almost make out the 1,500+ pound carillon bells. They once played “Handel’s “Cambridge Quarters” on the quarter hour.
Unused for many years, they were restored in 1979 for Pope John Paul II’s visit to the Windy City.

Suitable for the Straus’ finance business, the pyramid symbolized longevity and permanence and the beehive stood for
industry and thrift. At one time, the thirtieth floor was the Straus Tower Observatory, which was open to the public for
viewing the city. This viewing room has a spiral staircase where one can view all (4) directions of the city. It’s super cool.

Today, still nestled within the bustle of the dynamic Chicago Loop and neighboring parks, our Metropolitan Tower’s classic grace is now garnished with the warmth and community of caring neighbors that share a zest for urban life and Chicago’s finest downtown establishments, as well as a passion for the rich history of their home.
